In more than one sense, the PSP's Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom is the first game of its kind to come to U.S. retail shelves. It is based on Idea Factory's PlayStation 2 original, which inspired anime and manga, as well as ports and sequels on PSP, PS3, Nintendo DS, and 3DS in its home country, but was never before available in on the other side of the Pacific. Hakuoki is presented as an otome game -- another possible first for North American retailers. Much more widely available in Japan, for players of all ages and interests, otome games are dating sims designed for a female audience. They typically feature a female protagonist with an in-game goal of developing a romantic relationship with one (or more) of her choice of (usually) male supporting characters. ~ T.J.
