Rainsplash An exciting mix of Alan Simon's originals and compositions of Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Duke Ellington-Billy Strayhorn. Musicians: Alan Simon - Piano Ralph Lalama - Tenor Sax John Goldsby - Bass Tim Pleasant - Drums Neil Tufano (Drums on 'Speak Like A Child') Reviews: 'Simon is a wonderful and consummate piano man,' said the Chicago Observer, '...a no-nonsense hard bop blowing date and all parties are at their swingin'est.' In Jazztimes, Stanley Dance wrote, 'His solos swing relatively loosely...a thoroughly professional date by men of whom more is sure to be heard.' And from Coda magazine: 'This fine working band creates intelligent, inventive, lyrical music.' Review by Steve Loewy A strong set reissued from LP, Rainsplash features the accomplished piano of Alan Simon, with tenor saxophonist Ralph Lalama on tenor, John Goldsby on bass, and Tim Pleasant on drums. Simon plays with assurance, his notes tinged with an impressionistic imprimatur. He is comfortable with a range of tempos, and his pleasant brand of relaxed swing delights as it edifies. His coupling of Debussy's 'Reflet's Dans Leau' with Strayhorn's 'Lush Life' is brilliant. Other pieces include two originals by Simon, and tunes by Herbie Hancock, Duke Ellington, and Wayne Shorter -- a generous program. At the time of this recording, Lalama's career had not yet taken off, and he shows the promise that he was to largely fulfill, with a commanding presence on his horn. This confident, swinging set is a fine example of the post-bop genre, and should reward the serious listener.
