Product Notes

Annie Benjamin is known for her vocal ability to go from 0 to 180 degrees in the blink of eye, driving flute licks and her alt-coAnnie Benjamin's music is alot like the weather in Texas.... unpredictable and constantly changing. Annie started off playing flute and was one of those nerdy kids who loved to practice her etudes, and to make up new parts for music. At age 16 she discovered punk rock and that she could REALLY sing, and soon after, she was kicked out of the school band. She has been a back up babe, a singing mermaid, a classical flute player, a roadie, a guitar player, a wannabe channeler of Judy Garland, and a devotee of the Texas Music Scene. She has sung everything from country to smooth jazz, rock and roll to old timey gospel. As a performer, she feels at home on the theatrical stage, in the concert hall, as well as in piano bars and gin joints of ill repute. Untry-pop melodies and songwriting. Annie has just relesed her much-anticipated second album, Some Kind of Wonder. The project features eleven new songs, an alt-Americana sound that she and Cam KIng produced. It features top notch players, including Martin Muse, Cam King, Andrew Hardin, Freddy Krc and Ross Holmes. She has also put together her own band, called Rocket Girl. The four-piece group has a driving energy that is just plain fun, and has been cleared for take off. Annie decided at the age of 9 that she wanted to be a singer, so it was a good thing that she woke up one morning with a 'voice the could stop traffic' at age 16. She first picked up flute at age 11, and at age 13 was recognized by the Texas Flute Club as an 'outstanding young player'. She went on to study with Claire Johnson at Southern Methodist University. She hit the Dallas clubs in the 1980's and followed various blues artists including ZuZu Bolin, and learned to emulate blues licks on her flute. She first picked up guitar while in her 20s in order to write and accompany herself. Throughout her career, Annie has followed a diverse path. She has performed in musical revues, theatrical productions, and has developed educational programs incorporating music and environmental awareness for elementary schools. She plays classical flute duets at swanky venues in the DFW area, and country music in dives and honky tonks. She has performed at The New Music Seminar, The Kerrville Folk Festival, and in 2006 was a featured songwriter at the National Folk Alliance. In 2001 she released her first album Life's Blessings on her label Rocket Girl Music, to critical acclaim, and she received rotation in the U.S. and Europe. In April of 2007 she released Some Kind of Wonder, which she co-produced with guitarist/songwriter/engineer Cam King. Her music has been featured on NPR's Car Talk. She was recently filmed for a spot on a new TV series that will air in Spring of 2008. Annie will claim lots of influences on her music, however her biggest came from listening to a local country music station as a child with her dad . At the age of seven, Annie was already versed in classics by Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Olivia Newton John and Chet Atkins. Her teens were spent absorbing The Beatles, Pat Benetar, all things Punk and a lot of classical music. She and her gal pals had a garage band in Jr High ( they are still playing together as Glitterhorn), and she has been in numerous bands since. She fronts her own band Rocket Girl which has an Alt/ Americana sound with just the right about of twang and a high octane mix of country, rock and powerhouse vocals. Annie is involved with numerous charities in the North Texas area, she hosts a monthly songwriters workshop in conjunction with The Dallas Songwriters Association and she really does believe that music can heal the world.
