Product Notes

'Get Off the Ground' was recorded cerca 1976 in LA for M&K Sound. It was done direct to disc as a demo of their state of the art sound recording. The bass player was Jamie Faunt who was playing with Chick at the time and the drummer was Ken Park who later went on tour with Donna Summers. We jammed for 8 minutes to get familiar with the changes and then Valli sang the melody. To our amazement the engineer said 'That's a Take'. Somehow this test pressing found it's way to London, where it was purchased in a second hand store for 10 pence. It became a cult classic in London jazz clubs thanks to disc jockey Seymour Nurse. Seymour called in May 2004 after locating us thru CDBaby and was ecstatic about finding us after a 23 year search for the mystery players since our names did not appear on the demo! The shorter version of 'Get off the Ground' is part of a compilation by BBC disc jockey and collector Giles Peterson which was releasd on Ubiquity label in Nov. 2005. 'You Don't Know What Love Is' was recorded live at The Place in Old San Juan. The bassist was Bob Bowers. The recording set-up was primitive, but it's some of Valli's best singing. 'How Long Has This Been Going On' was recorded at Sage & Sound studios in Hollywood. The bass player was Bob Saravia and the drummer was Carl Rigoli. We were all with the Jim Morris Band at the time. Bobby Shew just happened to be in the studio and contributed a great horn obbligato. He also played trumpet on the shorter 1978 version of 'Get off the Ground'. 'Age of Aquarius' and 'Man of La Mancha' were recorded live at the Dorado Beach Hotel in Puerto Rico around 1970. The bass player was Raful Martinez and the drummer was Vic Mannechia. We always played the first set in the lounge for cocktail hour and nobody cared much what we played as long as it created a pleasant ambience so we had a chance to jam and experiment. You can hear the Happy Hour crowd in the background. We got into some free improv in the middle of these songs. Don Baaska.
