Product Notes

Big Grin bandinfo The small community of creative musicians in Amsterdam has always had something unique to say. Humor, recalcitrance, intercultural exchanges and directness are some of the elements that one can find in the many projects based in Amsterdam. From this scene the trio 'Big Grin' has emerged. Guitarist Guillermo Celano, originally from Buenos Aires, teamed up with bassist Rodrigo Reijers and drummer Flin van Hemmen to explore their musical ideas. This resulted in their debut record for Trytone, a label that has hosted many independent groups over the past 10 years. In the CD's selection of original compositions, Big Grin experiments with a variety of sounds giving the songs a distinct color. Some clearly point to Celano's Argentinian roots, in others the heritage of rock is undeniable, while the history of jazz courses throughout. Flin van Hemmen, a virtuoso drummer currently residing in New York, debuts as a singer and guitarist on this disc, adding an extra color to the melody. This emphasizes the simple and song-like quality of the tunes, contrasting with the sometimes alienating guitar sounds and roars. Bassist Rodrigo Reijers completes Big Grin with a colourfull foundation, utilizing the many possibilities his instrument has to offer, from the wild and energetic role in Celano's tune 'expectations' and the van hemmen tune 'coda' to the subtle arco playing in van Hemmens ballad 'coming down'. Big Grin plays music that is personal and original. Enjoy. Review from Jazzflits / February 09 " The trio Big Grin, with guitarplayer Guillermo Celano, Rodrigo Reijers on bass and drummer Flin of Hemmen, offers a very different musical world. The albumcover allready indicates the direction the band is going. It could have been progrock albumcover from the 1970's. The opening song, 'The End', (aha, humor), immediately demonstrates that this association is correct. Van Hemmen's wordless song is very similar to that of the other singing drummer, Robert Wyatt (who plays with a.o. Soft Machine). The open structure of the improvisations here, combined with a refined sense of adventure, also reminds us of another monument of the rock-avant-garde of the seventies: Henry Cow. However, Big Grin is not a retro band; their approache is much too idiosyncratic to be just that. For instance, in songs like 'Uncle Willie'and 'Big Crime' we hear Americana-with-a-wink, which is patented by Bill Frisell. The title song is a nice piece, with a guitar party in the style of The Ventures. All these influences, which Big Grin is flirting and getting involved with, are interesting and surprising. They actually put that big grin on the listener's face."(Herman te Loo)
