Product Notes

'You can break my heart but you can't break my spirit' - 'Heart Song' On A Date With Electric, the debut LP by Blackmarket Star, a hiss can often be found backing-up deep scattershot beats, distorted guitars, thumping bass and emotional vocals. The album is an eclectic, genre blending mix that one writer called 'flesh & blood electronica versus rock in a battle over who has the most soul.' Blackmarket Star is the brainchild of well-traveled Atlanta native, Glover, who wrote and played all the instruments. 'Circumstances prevented the immediate ability or desire to put together a band. My previous situation ended on a sour note and all I was concerned about was songs. This is an album that I've been working on in bits and pieces for a long time. They are very personal songs that I just wanted to commit to disk.' In addition, Glover produced and engineered the album's eleven tracks in his home studio. 'I put ideas directly to disk as inspiration hit. I ended up recording more than forty songs for this album. I was able to open up my mind on tape at all hours of the day and night and then fine tune those ideas without the pressure of a clock ticking away studio time.' A Date With Electric leads off with a hypnotic assault of sound before Glover declares 'You can break my heart, but you can't break my spirit' on 'Heart Song.' The track sets the tone for the album that explores deep-rooted emotions - anger, loss and a will to survive. The infectious bass line on the self-reflective track, 'All of Me' stimulates the head and rocks the body. While, 'The Secret That I Keep' takes on a trance-like tone before totally changing direction. Blackmarket Star has generated an amazing word-of-mouth buzz on-line through popular sites such as Yahoo, Starpolish,Mpulse and MP3.Com. But it's the music's diversity that is attracting fans from all genres. It was an unexpectedly heavy response to 'One Little Pill' that inspired Glover to take a closer look at that track. 'One Little Pill' confronts the overly subscribed behavioral drugs that children are forced to take by school administrators, parents and doctors. ('A child is not a laboratory animal, a test specimen, lab rat, punching bag, an accident or combination of the above'). 'When I started getting e-mails asking if 'One Little Pill' was about ecstasy, I felt compelled to write an intro to help shed a little more light on that song because I was treated like one of those lab rats growing up,' says Glover. 'I'm moved that people are finding their own personal meaning from many of my songs, but on this track I wanted people to better understand where I was coming from.' DJ Mantis took a personal interest in 'One Little Pill,' remixing the track, which has gone on to become a staple in both the Orlando and Washington, DC club scenes. Since completing this album, Glover has been joined by a band that he describes as a sonic assault unit. Commenting on his bandmates Glover said, 'Essa is a guitarist from another zone who is an effects genius, DJ Blue is a master audio manipulator, Rod Cunha drums with equal parts power and finesse and Badger is the immovable bass force who turns in nothing but a strong performance.' Now as a quintet, Blackmarket Star's music is being pushed to a whole new level. According to Glover the future is all that matters. 'It's exciting because there are four new perspectives and sets of emotions. Artists come and go so quickly today because they refuse to be themselves. Blackmarket Star will always have my personal stamp on it, whether it's one album or ten albums from now but just like anything growth is key to making that ride worthwhile. I'm really proud of this album and this band. Now, I hope that people can share their darkest hours, decadent streaks and blissful moments with Blackmarket Star.' There is plenty more of the above in store for them.
