Hmmm... First album released late 1998; second appears early 2005. Many might be tempted to ask, in the words of blonde-mop-topped popster Emma Bunton, "What took you so long?" Okay - there was that 6-track mini-album in 2001, and a gig (at Truck) to boot; but it's hardly a frantic work schedule we're talking about, is it? But relativity touches everything, even the world of rock, as Einstein would have undoubtedly said had he watched the "Some Kind of Monster" film documenting the making of Metallica's \'Saint Anger\'. It's like the sloth who got mugged by a gang of snails on the way home from the pub - when asked what his attackers looked like, he said "I don't know - it all happened so quickly." so it goes ... Our previous modus operandi was simple: book four days in the studio, then try and write three or four songs to record. Some songs worked, though often not in the way originally intended; others, for a variety of reasons, didn't fully crystallise, and were forever shrouded with what ifs and if onlys. But this would be different: we would go in with enough bare outlines of songs to begin working, and then keep going until we had written and recorded a whole album. It would be an ongoing process, like a giant lint roller, slowly gathering fluff as it makes it's way across the infinite carpet of creativity... There were a few difficulties to overcome. First off, we didn't have a female vocalist, former chanteuse Liz having retired after the Truck gig, and Trudy being in the midst of life changes that would lead her to living in Spain. In fact, seven months in, with over half the album partly recorded, we still didn't have a female vocalist. Enter the highly talented Ms Kate Garrett, who managed to get down vocals for four songs in a single morning, before settling into a more reasonable work rate for the rest of the album. Schmokin\'... We also needed a cellist. Meraud - who was living opposite Pete at the time - was a double bass player, but was in the process of learning the cello; so in she came, lending spooky shivers and moving melodies to five of the eleven tracks. As ever, Dungeon-meister Rich Haines lent us his vastly patient ears and warm production skills; he makes Hitchcockian cameo appearances on the opening two songs. Psycho... There's some old puzzle about the arrow that in each second travels half the distance it did in the previous one; when - if ever - does it reach it's target? I guess it got a little like that with us - cosied up in the womb-like otherworld of the Dungeon, it's easy to carry on tinkering, adding another guitar bit here, re-writing a vocal line there. And then there's mastering, artwork...... A lot of water has passed under many bridges, for all of us, in the journey of making this record. We sang water under bridges... "Resolution" seems a particularly appropriate name, although I often wondered this year if an end point existed. But as I write - touch wood, and holding my lucky rabbit's foot (though not that lucky, or he'd still have four feet) - the CD is finally in production. And we've even played a gig, with more booked; I can feel the sweat starting to drip from my brow... and now, read on...
