Breakin' Nu Ground : Red Rocking Chair[CD]
Breakin' Nu Ground is an Old Time String Band keeping it's roots in traditional mountain and dance music but also plays a variety such as gospel, blues, and swing depending upon the occasion. They have performed for numerous civil war reenactments and dances. The band was organized in 2003 and have played many performances since they first came together. This is their first CD and was recorded as a live show with almost no mixing. The reason was, if you ever have the chance to hear our group "live" it will sound the same as the CD. We play what we like and what we hope you will like as well. The band has twice won 1st place in the old time band competition at the Maury River Fiddlers Convention at Buena Vista, Va. OLD TIME FIDDLE - Randy Holland. He is a native of Rockbridge county, Virginia and proud to call the county his home... Randy was an "old timer" before getting into music and plays a fiddle he made from wood cut from his own land. He has a great vocal range and when pressed, can sing as fast as an auctioneer. For many years Randy and Linda farmed using 19th century technology, plowing and harvesting with draft horses and making a living with their hands and wits. "Breaking new ground" was the phrase used to describe clearing land for a new field. This seemed an appropriate name for their new venture into music. Randy is self employed and builds custom cabinets, heirloom quality furniture and is an accomplished blacksmith. BASS - Linda Holland. She is also a Rockbridge county native. Randy and Linda dated all through high school and recently celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary. She has played bass for several years and has a great rhythmic driving force. She plays an old 52 Kay bass that she and Randy put back together. She is an accomplished singer and guitarist and can take any song and make it uniquely her own. Her voice - sometimes sweet-sometimes raw- draws out the very essence of the melody. She is a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and is the driving force in the accomplishments of their home and businesses. GUITAR - Harry Mason . Also a Rockbridge county native. Harry is a unique guitarist and has lots of experience on the lead and rhythm guitar. He started playing and singing at an early age and grew up surrounded by a musical family. He has played with many great performers like Mike Seeger, the hit gospel group, "The Sounds of Victory" and has performed on numerous radio and TV shows thru the years. He has never met a stranger and is well liked by everyone he meets. He is the glue that holds our group together! CLAWHAMMER BANJO- Tony Schmieg. Lives in Rockbridge county. Tony started out playing harmonica, but soon decided to play old time banjo. It appeared that some folks in the music world just don't like the sound of a harmonica and he tells the story of sitting down at a jam with a case of harmonicas and the fiddler stating, that's got to be harmonicas or a gun in that case and I hope like the dickens it's a gun !!!! He has been playing the banjo for several years, has great style and technique and has started singing lead on several tunes.
