Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio I began pursuing music on the piano at the late age of 13. I took lessons for a little over a year (went through three teachers) but found it difficult to get a teacher to work with my ear for music. So, I just started writing music instead of studying it. All of my music exists in one place...my head. I have never written a note down in my life and wouldn't know how to if I tried. This makes things difficult on collaborative efforts with anyone who really knows music...but give me a key and a few minutes to listen and I can figure most anything out. There is a another CD (the first) and was available on a limited run called 'Emergence'. It was quite an arduous effort and recorded completely live in Greensboro, NC. The reason was to begin documenting my musical journey. Inspiration came from the Windham Hill label back in the day. It was my first exposure to solo music that stood on it's own. When I first heard George Winston doing his thing, I thought 'maybe there is a place for me and my music in this world.' The music itself is comes from within. I don't actually know where it comes from...I feel more like a conduit. I just tap into an emotion...and see where it takes me. Some songs like 'The Grande-Summit' took months to refine. Others like 'North Georgia Moon' took minutes. I am not seeking fame/fortune. I simply understand that for some reason it is important to document/record the result of a gift that was granted me. If I touch someone...anyone in the process with my music then I consider myself successful. You can find more cool stuff regarding this CD on my spot on facebook and myspace. Just look for Brian Kast. My friend Nathan Lang (see Nathan at godinthebox. Tv) thought enough of the music on 'Thirteen Steps' and 'Emergence' to include it in his upcoming film 'God in the Box'. It is a fascinating documentary style exploration of the public's perception of what their image of God may be and what God means to them. Nathan was the first to legally pirate my music fresh from the studio. This is one of the perks if you let me crash on your couch while recording a CD...which Nathan did. He just needed some dummy tracks to use as filler until he found some better music. However, the combination of my music being very reasonable in price (free) and some urgings from one of his editors that the music really fit...well, it looks like I may have made the cut. My first official Hollywood credit is forthcoming! So, please indulge and enjoy some real grass roots music that is from the heart...from it's inception...through the recording process (with mark Cross)...art (thanks to my niece Sarah)...layout (my neighbor/cat sitter Dondi Fontinot)to the final product.
