Product Notes

Jewish spiritual renewal. Olam Haba. Creation mythology. And a heavy dose of in-your-face, head-to-the-ground punk rock fury. This is CAN CAN. And they're your new favorite band. Who would have known that deep in the rural south, a group that named themselves CAN CAN (in order to keep a positive, can-do attitude) would write polemics about religious hypocrisy (Make A Pretty Motion) and midrash about Jacob's Ladder (Boreska Mines). 'People see us on stage and think we're out of our minds, spitting and screaming and sweating all over the place. Then they read our lyrics and realize our songs are mostly about religion,' says frontman Patrick A., formerly of the Bomp/Alive Records band The Love Drunks, 'and I think they're even more shocked.' Writing spiritual-themed songs was just a natural extension of their personalities, as guitarist Mary Collins (formerly of The Motolitas) and drummer Josh Lamar (ex-drummer for Nick Oliveri of Queens of the Stone Age) both lived in the conservative rural South with Pentacostal revivalism and the apocalypse around every corner, while Patrick A. (the only Jew in the band) studies Torah and attends services at several synagogues. Despite their approach, CAN CAN are not, and will never be, a church band. 'We write songs that mean something, instead of this nihilistic, coked up garbage you hear all the time,' remarks Mary Collins. Don't believe it? Read what critics have to say: ...the odd conjunction of punk and Jewishness...[Can Can] plays songs that weld punk attitude to heavy metal's metaphorically dense, lyrically pungent aura. -Saul Austerlitz (The Forward) [CAN CAN] speak to the experience of being religious and existing outside the box. -Matthue Roth (Nextbook.org) The threesome is dynamic. The careening punk emanating from their one drum kit, one guitar and screaming vocals sounds like it was produced by an army -Julia Reidy (Paste Magazine) Think of them as Jucifer's precocious and flamboyant kid brother. [Mary's] pop smarts shine through, even when coupled with...Patrick A.'s frequently unhinged effervescence -Lee Valentine Smith (Creative Loafing) For more information contact PAB Entertainment: www.myspace.com/pabbooking.
