Product Notes

The Continuing Evolution of Bob Collum & the Welfare Mothers First there was Alt-Country singer-songwriter Bob Collum. This Tulsa Oklahoma native had released two very well received solo albums of Americana styled rock; 1997's More Tragic Songs of Life and 2000's Low Rent Romeo. Bob's hard work and constant gigging earned him a following of dedicated supporters and lots of glowing reviews. But something was missing and he knew he had to cross an ocean to find it. So, he booked a one-way ticket to the UK. After several months on the British singer-songwriter circuit Bob knew what he had to do...he wanted drums. He wanted bass. He wanted a 12 piece gospel choir, a horn section, 6 female backing singers, and a rhinestone encrusted jumpsuit at one point too, but soon saw sense. What Bob wanted was to form a band. Enter bassist Dan Wilkinson and drummer Paul Quarry.. thus Bob Collum & the Welfare Mothers were born! Following a year of wowing punters in venues all over the British Isles the group convened in Gravity Shack Studios in South London with producer Pat Collier (Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock). The band emerged with the new album The Boy Most Likely To.. which has been heralded as some of Bob's finest work to date. Some of the highlights of the album include the 'pure-pop for now people' delights of Merry Go Round , Goodbye Walter, and A Little Less Soul; the spooky moodiness of Murder In Arkansas; the no-nonsense rock and roll of You Know (She Knows); and the subtle melodic charms of Blue Enough. ' Bob Collum and the Welfare Mothers make great music. It is direct with a love of lyrics, touched by a melodic sense of fun. 'The Boy Most Likely To..' is the kind of album you don't hear too much these days. Songs lovingly written, carefully crafted and played with sense of freedom.' -Net Rhythms UK 'The key composition on this record is 'Victim that you Need'. It best encapsulates Collum's ethos on song writing within the pop/ rock genre; the discipline of disguise. Set to a swirling Hammond figure & rolling chord sequence, an unbelievably sad lyric... This subject matter has not been dealt with so well since Ryan Adams 'Come Pick Me Up'.' - Americana UK ' Top 10 Albums Of The Year 2004 - #2. The Boy Most Likely To - Bob Collum & The Welfare Mothers ' --Nick West, editor Bucketfull Of Brains.
