Hi-Top Sneakers notes for CDbaby site 'Hi-Top Sneakers' is a joyful, rootsy romp led by accordionist Dan 'Daddy Squeeze' Newton. Dan and an all-star cast of musicians give you almost an hour of swing, jugband, blues, country, polka, and cumbia, with a couple beautiful waltzes thrown in. Dan is joined by Pat Donohue, Bob Ekstrand and Steve Kaul on guitars, Brian Wicklund on fiddle and mandolin, bassist Gary Raynor, Clint Hoover on harmonica, Tom Lewis on bass, Tom Wells on tuba, vocalist Jon Rodine, and percussionists Marc Anderson, Dehl Gallagher and Elizabeth Rowan. Dan 'Daddy Squeeze' Newton has dazzled audiences with his unique accordion style for decades. His appearances with 'A Prairie Home Companion', Cafe Accordion Orchestra, the Rockin' Pinecones, Jumbo Ya Ya, Daddy Squeeze & the Dr, and Donohue, Newton & Raynor have gained him a reputation as a talented and versatile musician. On 'Hi-Top Sneakers' Dan showcases his song-writing skills, presenting 13 original tunes and songs that have been among the favorites of his fans over the years. He has appeared on recordings by Prudence Johnson, Peter Ostroushko, Peter Mayer, Ann Reed, The Proclaimers, Son Volt, and Neal & Leandra. Dan "Daddy Squeeze" Newton knows most music fans just want to shake their butt, and he's happy to help on this rootsy solo CD, showcasing the good-natured humor and world-music mastery that has made him the Twin Cities' go-to accordionist. Newton has dropped the French-influenced sound of his Café Accordion Orchestra in favor of Western swing and gospel stomps. "Rattle Them Bones" and "Put Your Snout to the Spout" sound straight from A Prairie Home Companion (Newton is a frequent guest), while "The Yohnnie B Goode Polka" takes the accordionists' tradition of ethnic puns to it's illogical conclusion. -TIM GIHRING/Minnesota Monthly Magazine 2007 St Louis Art Museum, St Louis, Mo 2007 Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis, Mn 2007 Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Mn 2005 International Akkordeon Festival, Vienna, Austria 2005 Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New York 2004 International Accordion Festival, San Antonio, Texas 2004 Smoky Hill River Festival, Salina, Kansas 2003 Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New York 2001 Chicago Institute of Arts 1993-2007 Minnesota State Fair, St Paul, Minnesota 1999 Kennedy Center for Arts, Washington, DC 1997-1998 Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camp, New York 1996-2001 Augusta Heritage Institute, West Virginia 1995 Accordion Festival, Montmagny, Québec) Canada 1993 Winnipeg Folk Festival, Winnipeg,Manitoba 1989-2007 Lark In the Morning Music Camp.
