Product Notes

Tagayet - Daniel Bouliane Why an album that combines world music with ambient progressive - simply because I always liked the mix of these types of music, even before it was made popular by well-known artists such as Peter Gabriel. Having started playing music at the age of 12 as a drummer-percussionist with a progressive music group, it was very natural for me to lean towards world music for it's complex and entrancing rhythms, as well as progressive music for it's "trippy" side. In addition, I composed the musical pieces with two distinct and complementary elements: the voice and percussions. My voice had to be the principal element on this record because in my view the voice is the most direct, versatile and universal instrument. Also, the "world beat" style of percussions and my ear as a producer had to be there...in other words, there had to be very few intermediaries between the listener and myself so that the music would reflect who I am with my ups and downs, my hopes and my dreams... Also, as this album is related to a film concerning an adventure in Niger, Africa, it is perfectly appropriate for it to have African musical colors. This world music album is special and unique...it is up to you to discover it and to make other people discover it as well... This solo album, the first for me, is the result of a profound inspiration resulting from two quite different but mysteriously linked events: the death of a close friend and the travel adventure to Niger of another friend who is a film producer. In the first place, the death of my friend touched me deeply. It also made me realize how fragile life is and that we are only passengers in this world where everything goes too fast. I had to make an album that would be up to his creative spirit. This friend, whom I met while I was working in a factory, always encouraged me to follow my dream as a musician. He told me that I had to make the plunge headfirst and abandon myself to what I felt deep down inside. This is what I did at the age of 26, after working seven years at the factory. The first years were very difficult, but I managed to survive. I learned to earn a living as a musician, composer and studio director. Throughout my seventeen-year professional life as a composer and producer, I was fortunate to meet many exceptional people with whom I made my music evolve. I also had the privilege to work with many extraordinary and talented ethnic musicians from here and elsewhere who taught me a lot, as well as work with very good "rock" musicians, one of whom participated in this album. I composed and produced many records for DAK (my own music group), as well as for other artists from the folk, pop and dance music worlds. I made the Onde-Spirale Studio known thanks to many soundtracks for different television programs, films and theatre plays. This album is also inspired by the story of my film producer friend who traveled to Niger to accompany his mother who helped in the building of a well. This well saved thousands of people during the last famine and it is intended to build another one. The film Tagayet, based on this story and which will have the album Tagayet as a soundtrack, shows how it is possible to lift the wall of unconsciousness between the poor countries of Africa and us. It underlines the importance to see through this wall "in the middle of nowhere", and reminds us that we can do something, that we must do something. Beyond our barriers and vicious circles, there is hope! As I have experienced it myself, I invite you to a profoundly human travel experience through the desert...often interior...to find the hope that lives in each one of us. I also invite you to dance to the African-inspired rhythms and to let yourself be taken by the magic of the music of Tagayet.
