In Montreal's indie pop noir group, The Darling Demaes, refreshing melodies and male-female-male harmonies meet a healthy dose of schizophrenia. Obsessive arrangements drift from section to section with an ease that somehow makes sense. A complex simplicity permeates the demaes' music, piloted by songwriter Erik Virtanen's unique, sometimes odd, but always honest storytelling that seamlessly blends joyful love, joyful hate, humour, regret, and utter horror. Echoes of classic '60s to new wave and the now are weaved through songs that humbly drift outside the box at moments without leaving anyone behind. The demaes' LP debut, 'A User's Guide to Raising the Dead', was recorded by Joseph Donovan (The Dears, Sam Roberts) and Adrian Popovich (Tricky Woo) and mastered by Noah Mintz (Feist, Broken Social Scene).
