Product Notes

Miami, Florida. August 21, 2001. Newcomer Dave Diaz released his first single, 'Truly,' a remake of the classic R&B hit by Lionel Richie. The new release includes a Salsa version of 'Truly,' and three exciting re-mixes by popular DJ Felix Sama. 'Lionel Richie is one of my idols,' says Diaz, 'and this song is a classic that can stand up to a Salsa arrangement as well as a re-mix and still hold it's own.' Diaz, who was born in New Jersey and later relocated to Miami, enjoyed a rich and diverse exposure to music like many bicultural youth in the U.S. The influence of the music of his parent's native Cuba, along with the rich R&B of the '80s and a powerful influence of popular singers such as Elvis Presley, to whom Dave attributes his drive to sing, are evident is the dynamic and different styles presented on this single CD. Also present in these carefully crafted and well thought remakes is the influence of Pop superstars such as Prince and a strong Hip-Hop thread as well. The various versions and arrangements which Dave Diaz offers in the CD, 'Truly' span the music markets, from tropical all the way to Hip-Hop, reaching a broad and multigenerational audience. The CD offers a Spanish-language Salsa version, 'De'veras', produced by Landy Castro, leader of his own band, Landy Castro y Su Orquesta La Llave, who also produced the English-language version. The re-mixes on tracks 1 and 5 were produced by well-known DJ Felix Sama, and on track 3 Dave collaborates with Sama to add his own flavor to the re-mix. 'Truly' is the first release on independent record label, DIGG Music. The single is available in most independent record stores in the South Florida area. About the artist Born in New Jersey to Cuban Parents, Dave Diaz learned to play 'Guajira' music, the traditional music of rural Cuba, as an adolescent but proclaims that Elvis Presley is the reason he became a singer. He is also heavily influenced by Pop idols such as Prince and Madonna while able to envision a fusion of Classic Rock, R&B and Salsa. This is not unusual for a musically sensitive young singer/songwriter who grew up with the rich multicultural experience of many Latin youth in the U.S. Dave began writing songs at the age of 13 after learning to play the guitar from a family friend. Upon meeting his older brother who arrived from Cuba in 1980, he was exposed to the music of a generation just slightly older than him, but old enough to introduce him to artists such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles and The Doors, all way before his time. The exposure to a diverse pallet of genres and arrangements sparked a need in Dave to explore all types of music, listening to different artists and watching the trends in popularity. Dave enrolled in a keyboard class at Hialeah High and began playing local gigs and jamming with different musicians at every opportunity. These experiences drove Dave to the recording studio. In the studio, Dave was able to experiment with arrangements and sounds that gave him more freedom and more control over his own music. In his own words, 'I wasn't going to get anywhere jamming in a garage.' After a time spent learning the technology of recording and experiencing the ups and mostly downs of trying to break as a new artist, Dave went back to New Jersey where, with his cousin, DJ Ernie Torres he began getting involved with Hip Hop and Dance music. Upon returning to Miami in the late '90s, Dave was once again reminded of his musical roots and synthesized this total experience in to his first release, 'Truly,' a Salsa remake (in Spanish and English) of Lionel Richie's classic hit, with three re-mixes as well.
