Product Notes

Ever since I was a child I was in touch with various Venetian folk songs that played in the background of parties, mountain excursions and happy moments of my life. Important pages of history belonging to the people of the Veneto region are found in these poor and naïve songs, with their own truths. It has been a precious experience to gather them and to propose them again, even if with a new musical look: it was like living our grandparents and great-grandparents history once again, in search of a world already lost. Most of the songs are dated between the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries - a period in Venetian history that corresponds to the annexation of the new Reign of Italy up till the First World War, and they describe the atmosphere and social tragedies of the Veneto in this troubled period. The outstanding problem of this historical moment is the eradication of the farming world due to emigration, the beginning of industrialization and wide-spread pauperism. The language of the songs in itself reflects a situation of transformation and economical-political change in the linguistic uncertainty of the texts, suspended between the memory of the characteristic Veneto dialect and a timid adherence to the language of the new Reign taught in schools and used in public offices. The most recurring theme is emigration, a dreadful and shattering phenomenon: two million people, corresponding to half of the entire population, emigrated to America or towards the mines of Belgium and Lorraine from 1866 to 1915. Other themes concern the beginning of industrialization, the First World War and the rhymes of the country tradition.
