How long did I wander? After years of study and practice and playing out in any venue I could find, a producer came up at a show and offered to record my solo piano music. Joe Jackson had heard my band Quiet Fire and our CD Red Daze and he was impressed enough to buy me time at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley to just sit down and record whatever I wanted to play. It was quite the dream come true as is any audience who listens to an artist play, and any recording of one's most personal and meaningful work. We spent two full days recording in Fantasy's Studio C on a beautiful Yamaha grand that both McCoy Tyner and Oscar Peterson had done sessions on in recent months. That was enough precedent to fill the room and squeeze me out entirely if I let it, but I was so happy to be there that I cornered any feelings of "Who the hell do I think I am?" and sat down and played my heart out for two days. The audience was the engineer, Dale Everingham, the producer, Joe Jackson, and my friend Angela Kerwin for whom I had written "The Liberation of Angelina." The cuts The Magus, Slow Turn, and Galapagos are all spontaneous improvisations that never existed before or after they were recorded. They were strictly the product of the atmosphere in the studio, in my heart, and of the "slow turning" of my fortunes toward fruition. As a result I had the concept and name for my Record Label, Slow Turn Records. There are moments here of almost excruciatingly free space and also my signature busywork where the tempos fly and the notes come fast and furious.
