Singer/Guitarist/Songwriter Gerard Maunick Winner of The West Australian Music Industry The West Australian Music Industry (WAMi)Award's for 'Song Of The Year - 2004' Song: SLIPPIN' WITH THE BLUES Album: VOODOO BREW 'The Man, The Music' and his 'Voodoo Brew' mystic, Mauritian born, Gerard Maunick comes alive and caresses his story of Melting Pots & Simmering fires, Howling Moons & Spirits Arising on this album. Hypnotic fingers, effortlessly works it's magic over Fender (Stratocaster)........... VOODOO BREW CD 2004 Press Release Probably the best description I could give you of Gérard is that if Jimi Hendrix & Bob Marley came back in the form of one person, that person would be Gérard. I have rarely met anyone with the love of music & people that Gérard has. A truly wonderful & talented guy, who plays like a demon, just amazing. John Ward. (CD Distributor /Only Blues Music 02/05/2004) Put simply, Gerard Maunick is a rare gem of a musician. Amazingly gifted not only as a player and songwriter, but as a thoughtful and in-turn thought provoking human being. Rhythms Blues and Roots (Xpress 01/04/2004) Maunick has crafted genre-crossing into a fine art with Voodoo Brew, effortlessly bridging the conceptual gaps between styles that (although not even worlds apart) seem destined to sit at opposite ends of the table. An accomplished guitarist and owner of a voice that could charm the pants off a nun, Maunick's talent is undeniable. Mike Wafer. (Xpress Magazine. Perth 27/04/2004) Recorded at Bob Patient's Anarchy Studios this second release from Mr Maunick is definitely a quantum leap. The sound, the songs and musicianship are impressive. This is a nicely balanced set of tunes from Gerard, which should win loads of new fans ... Sylvester Fox. (Groove Magazine June/August 2004) For a man who has been likened to Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix it is perhaps hard to live up to such bold claims. But one listen to his song 'War' on 'Voodoo Brew' has you almost believing it. It's not just the deep, deep reggae feel or the anti war sentiments that mirror those two greats, perhaps it's Gerard's compassion for the common man that oozes through his music. "I'm a great believer in people," intones Gerard in his clipped Mauritian patois, "people can sense if you're playing from the heart. They appreciate it." From his nineties blues adventures with Powershift through to his first solo CD 'Soul Kreol' in 2001 and onto the 2003 opus 'Voodoo Brew' Maunick remained faithful to his vision of playing the blues with some cross cultural flavours. "Right now I'm in a transition period because I have a new manager and I'm looking to change my musical direction, possibly to evolve away even further from the blues to a more world music sound. We're working on a film clip for 'War' at the moment and we're forging ahead looking for new musicians. I've never really had a permanent band to play with live and I've been very lucky to have special guys to record with. But in the past it's been very unfortunate that I haven't been in a position to be able to offer the right opportunities to players. It wasn't feasible. I'm hoping that'll change in the future." 'Voodoo Brew' certainly does have some fine musicians on it. Rick Eastman is on drums, and had a couple of mentions in the last Groove issue for his work with Jonathan Cope and Geisha. Then there's bassists Greg Thomson and John Wilson, and of course the unstoppable keyboard player and Anarchy Studios producer Bob Patient. Last but not least is Gerard's musical partner in crime Tina Simone whose vocals and co written 'Angelina' are a highlight. Tina and Gerard have been performing as a duo around town, giving them an opportunity to feature new original material as well as more familiar cover territory. "All will be revealed," says Gerard. Grabs can't wait to see what the "stone age man" who "sometimes" can "fly too close to the sun" will come up with next. (Groove Magazine - Paul McCarthy.
