Product Notes

'Giantsequoia displays a pop sensibility that's innovative and have a sound all their own,' declares recording engineer Bogdan Hernik. This sound is what distinguishes them from the masses of cookie-cutter modern rock bands. Giantsequoia's debut release, 'Moment in the Sun' captures the sound that it's members have been striving to create since their individual beginnings. Brothers John and Steve Pompeo were on top of their game playing in the funk-rock band Vitamin F. They enjoyed much success playing regularly in the top clubs of Philadelphia and NYC. However, tension between band members brought the group's groove to a screeching halt, and eventually caused it's demise. After crawling out from under the rubble, they were ready for something new. John recalled, 'After the band split up I suddenly felt free to write without limitations and after a few months I had enough new material to start over. It was exciting!' In October 1998 the Pompeos began recording the first songs for 'Moment in the Sun' before Giantsequoia was even created. Anxious to continue their momentum, they hired studio musicians to record the bass and keyboard tracks. Recorded at Indre Studios in South Philadelphia, the album features guest performances from area musicians C.R. Gruver on Hammond Organ and ex-Martin's Dam bassist Mark Gorman. Things were moving quickly. Together with Vitamin F's management team, Steve began setting the ground work for high level promotion. After months of searching for a full-time bassist to complete the core of their new project, the brothers finally found the missing ingredient in Jeremy Pflug, formally of the Philly area groove-band Mandarin. The final five tracks recorded for the album would feature Jeremy on bass and pianist/keyboardist Amber DeLaurentis. 'I guess it was their borderline-insane enthusiasm that attracted me to the band,' Jeremy recalled. 'They already had gigs and promotions set up before all the songs were finished. I've always been drawn to risk-takers.' Also impressed by the musical hooks in songs like 'Parallel', he knew he wanted to be part of what the Pompeos were trying to accomplish. Pulling from elements of jazz, funk, pop and rock, the trio achieves a unique musical perspective. Philadelphia radio program director Jim McGuinn, y-100, was extremely impressed with the sound of 'Moment in the Sun.' 'The first time I heard Giantsequoia, I couldn't believe it was a local band! The production is solid and the songs stand up with a lot of what you hear coming from major labels.' But the band is more interested in what their fans have to say. Their following grows with every show. There is a real buzz building around this trio. One first-time listener exclaimed, ' (their music) is groovy and their lyrics linger sweetly behind.' John Pompeo: vocals and guitars Jeremy Pflug: bass Steve Pompeo: drums and percussion.
