A re-release of a truly avant-garde album, which, as so many works by Harald Grosskopf, opened new pathways and fashions in the 1980s. Fresh melodies, dynamic rhythms, and warm emotions, constitute the main traits of 'Oceanheart'. The dominating style flows near to Synth-Pop, although some traits of Space Music, Techno and New Instrumental Music can also be appreciated, all that under the personal focus of this pioneer of musical avant-garde. Also noteworthy are the slow passages, often of a luminous, romantic Ambient. Recorded at the Graefstudio in Berlín, and mixed at the personal studio of Christopher Franke, this re-release has been re-mastered by Ron Boots. Edgar Kogler This 1985 reissue comes without any extras, hence the short running time. "Eve On The Hill" starts in light pop mode, a bouncy sequence and upbeat rhythms setting the pace. "While I'm Walking" ambles leisurely along and does indeed sound like walking set to music. Again, the mood is very lighthearted and happy. The title track comes next, slowing things down considerably, quite a moody atmospheric departure from the structured tunes preceding it, a nice counterpoint to those. "Coming Out" takes us right back into toe-tapping music, pleasant and just barely avoiding being overly cute. "Pondicherry Dream" has a cool tribal beat and brisk synths, again quite cheerful. Though lamely titled, "Minimal Boogie" has a cool pulse that grabs attention right away, and the bright piano that joins it does boogie right along with it. Grosskopf creates a busy yet hypnotic number with this one. It would be extremely hard to be down while listening to Oceanheart. Phil Derby / Electroambient Space This 38 minute CD from 2004 is a reissue of Grosskopf's classic release from 1985. Grosskopf plays keyboards, drums and percussion. He is joined on this record by Christian Wasdaris on tablas. Sequenced chords expand into ambrosial passages, blending with engaging riffs and gripping rhythms. The melodies continue to mature during each track, exploring variations and delivering a constant stream of sonic surprises. The riffs grow increasingly complex, while the percussion swells to epic proportions, imbuing each tune with majestic scope and rewarding stature. Lush atmospherics provide heady backdrops for more energetic fashions, as nimble-fingered electronics garnish these sedate elements with their vivacious resonance. Attractive percussion augments this gestalt with a brisk propulsion. Striving skyward, the tunes indulge in sidereal expressions that generate lavish and satisfying diversions. The interplay between rhythms and riffs is superb and inventive, invoking a rousing frame of mind that satiates a wide range of sonic desires. Although possibly best remembered as the drummer who graced many of Klaus Schulze's early recordings, Grosskopf establishes his own compositional skills with this enchanting music. While known as an integral contributor to the classic Berlin School of electronics, Grosskopf's music employs a versatile range of styles that carries the listener far beyond any retro sound, delving deeply into realms that transcend any dated quality and remain firmly rooted in tomorrow's promise. Matt Howarth / Soniccuriosity At last available is Harald's follow-up album to SYNTHESIST. OCEANHEART contains the same rhythmic / melodic / style as does it's forerunner, but with a slightly more exotic approach. The compositions have more sonic spices added, and diverse instruments as well. In a way it is an excellent precursor to some of his more recent Sunya Beat work. Archie Patterson Dans le monde de l'Electronic Music, Harald Grosskopf n'est pas un inconnu. Ses premiers faits d'armes remontent aux 70's, avec Ashra, Wallenstein et bien sûr Klaus Schulze (les parties de batterie sur Body Love vol.II et 'X', c'était lui). Oceanheart, son deuxième album, a été écrit en 1985. Il témoigne d'un parfait équilibre entre synthétiseurs et percussions. Il en résulte une musique qui évoque les albums Correlations et Belle Alliance d'Ashra, avec beaucoup de séquenceurs, de belles mélodies et un énorme travail à la batterie. Pour ce qui est de la sonorité de l'album, on peut également trouver une petite filiation avec Hyperborea de Tangerine Dream. Sans doute le résultat du mixage qui fut confié à Chris Franke. A sa sortie, cet album n'a certainement pas révolutionné le schmilblik mais il eût été dommage de passer une deuxième fois à coté. LouLou / Prog-résiste.
