The album "HJ" is like a great movie soundtrack, an adventurous eclectic mixture of catchy songs and instrumentals. The CD comes in a beautiful cardboard package, with HJ's own offbeat artwork. Total playing time is over 52 minutes. Multi-instrumentalist HJ has a particular liking for music which is not too strictly bound by conventions. He switches styles between songs and created this highly enjoyable CD. HJ is influenced by all music he has heard. Influences range from other eclectic artists as Ennio Morricone, The Beatles and Frank Zappa to Dick Dale, The Clash, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Cliff Gallup, Joe Meek, Link Wray, Mick Ronson, Art Pepper and Antonio Carlo Jobim. Any band from Rhino's 'Cowabunga!'- surf box could be mentioned as well. HJ's interest in instrumental surf music was born when watching the movie Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino. The energy of Dick Dale's guitar playing in 'Misirlou' made a huge impression. From that moment, HJ started to include the power, the lightness and the pure fun of instrumental surf into his own work. Born in The Netherlands, HJ learned to play flute at young age, then switched to guitar and alto-sax, followed by every musical instrument he could lay his hands on. He played guitar in the Dutch rock group Garbitsjkeng, though was forced to quit after a minor aeroplane accident. Loud music became unbearable to one of his ears for a couple of years. Searching for alternative ways to carry on his passion, he started performing on the streets of European cities. Meanwhile he has written and recorded about 50 songs and instrumentals. A selection of these are now available on this self titled solo CD. HJ also created soundtracks for films by artist Luciano Pinna of the famous Gerrit Rietveld Art Academy, with whom he is playing in the band Stunfish. The first Stunfish album is currently being recorded.
