Hoplites is based in Atlanta, GA. The group began in 2004 as a trio with Eva Sotus (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Roland Alston (guitars, mandolin) and Kevin Andrews (bass, guitar, synth guitar and stick) and started rehearsing and playing out without a drummer or percussionist. After some time, a little song writing and new band arrangements (of some of Eva's solo songs), they decided it was time to go into the studio. When recording began, Sean McNally sat in as drummer, but was too busy with other projects to join the band. While those first sessions were in progress, drummer Bryan Brownlow was introduced to the group. Everyone hit it off, so at mid point during recording, Bryan joined the band and recorded the second half of the CD. The drum tracks that Sean contributed were great so they were kept, with Bryan adding additional percussion to some of those tracks. The songs on HOPLITES are of different styles because the arrangements and instrumentation were crafted around the feel of the lyrics. Hoplites are fans of music and strive to give each song a unique style and feel.
