Product Notes

" Music for a much fragmented world " is my first work entirely devoted to ambient music. The main title results from my own questioning concerning the usefulness of things. As the humanist Jacquard wrote : " efficiency is secondary". Basically, in this line of thought the most important things in life are those which are useless or serve only to make us wonder and dream : e.g. The sound of a faraway train, a child's smile, or a melody by Wim Mertens. COMPOSITION AND INTERPRETATION : Technical note For several years I have worked with an exceptional instrument : the ACXEL resynthesizer. It performs as a synthesizer (substractive synthesis and additive synthesis), as well as a resynthesiser and possesses unequaled power (256 independent oscillators entirely programmable in real time). This instrument was invented by Pierre Guilmette, an engineer from Québec. There are approximately ten functionning ACXELS in the world. Thanks to this unique musical instrument I have developed a playing technique which enables me to introduce improvisations in a piece, while maintaining intact it's soul. The AXCEL is so powerful as to render the use of sequencers unnecessary. Thus I use the keyboard more as an " on-off " toggle. Once notes are played, I " freeze " them in " sustain " mode and proceed to create music by touching the AXCEL's tactile screen. To increase power, I sample the sounds that do not require modification in real time. I developed this method of composition and interpretation years ago. However, before acquiring the Axcel, this method was much more limited.
