Product Notes

Alto saxophonist/flutist, composer James Spaulding is one of the many fine artist to come out of the Indianapolis, Indiana area. His 35-year plus career in music is both distinguished and diverse. As an all purpose hardbop freelance sideman, he has recorded with many of jazz's elite, and he can be heard on albums now considered classics. Spaulding's list of credits include Louis Armstrong's last recording date, 'Louis Armstrong & Friends,' Flying Dutchmen; Max Roach's 'Drums Unlimited,' Atlantic Records; and a series of recordings on the Blue Note label. He has been a member of the Freddie Hubbard Quintet;David Murray Octet & Big Band,a brief stay with the World Saxophone Quartet;recorded with Wayne Shorter;Bobby Hutcherson;Sun Ra; and Max Roach, to name only a few. Musically, James is a modernist, with solid roots in classical jazz. His saxophone style is an extension of the Charlie Parker influence, but his overall concept incorporates much of the broad jazz saxophone heritage. Voice music critic, Gary Giddens describes James as 'The Conservator of the music, who has served since the 60's.' He has recorded 6 CDs as leader on the Muse and HighNote labels. His original music, a suite entitled 'A Song of Courage,' was performed by him with full orchestra and choir at the Voorhees Chapel at the Rutgers University campus from funds awarded him by the National Endowment for the Arts. More recently, James has formed a quintet that encompasses his concept of the connectedness of jazz that universally bonds us together. It's a progressive group whose roots are firmly embedded in Bebop as Jazz's common language, but it incorporates much of the broad jazz idiom heritage. In July 2000, James recorded with his quintet under his own label, Speetones Music. There are 2-volumes: Volume 1 (#1001) Blues Up & Over is now available. Volume 2 (#1002).Round To It is now available.
