JANA LANKA Jana Lanka was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka. She spent her early childhood on the island and moved with her family to Japan where she lived until her early teens. Absorbing the musical traditions of these places she was able to sing in Singhalese and Japanese at a young age. The formal classical training she received in Germany enabled her to sing in the Bach Choir in Munich. Work with an array of jazz formations added English and French to the languages she is performing in. This multi cultural background is the foundation of Janas' music. Rather than imitating styles she is using elements of these traditions to form an entirely new sound scape. It is her very own musical language that captures the imagination of the listener. Janas vision embraces the combination of the mundane and the sacred. It is a vision of a world in which different cultures and their religions peacefully coexist (the song 'Pacem' and 'Temple of God' use Moslem and Christian chants side by side). It evokes the image of people of all colors celebrating, dancing and praying together.
