Walter Huston to James Craig From the movie ALL THAT MONEY CAN BUY In a world full of Hooties, Green Days, and Backstreet Boys, it would seem that the music world has lost it's soul. It's almost as if the record companies today are run by the same people that brought us fast food Mecca's like Burger King and Taco Bell. Get it ready fast, wrap it up pretty, and sell as many as possible. Who cares if these bands really know how to play their instruments or have anything to say, just as long as they look angry and jump around on stage a lot. But after a while, you get tired of that same old soybean substitute and you crave a good meal, something with substance, like steak and potatoes. Enter The Jay Miley Band. Miley and his band have been performing throughout the Southeast for several years. They have appeared on the 'Major League 3' soundtrack as well as being featured in the movie. Fueled by frontmen Miley and bassist, vocalist Rodney Stone, this band grooves every chance they get. Finally after the urging of their fans, they released a CD titled 'SHELTER' on their own label, Eclipse Records in 1995. They recruited drummer Stevie Kent to add his special touch to the project. In the past, Stevie has performed with Sea Level, keyboardist Chuck Leavell, and the Jumper Cables, as well as a few shows with the Allman Brothers band whenever they came through town. His sound fit perfectly in the balance with what Miley and Stone wanted to achieve. 'We didn't want to put out the same old slick, mindless crap that drowns the airwaves. We wanted to capture what we do live in the best way possible. We didn't care if we made mistakes or had a bad note here and there. We just wanted to groove. We didn't even try to shop for record labels or anything because we knew we wouldn't have that freedom to create what we wanted.' Also on the CD are several other great musicians, being John Etheridge, David Toma, and Scott Price on drums. Keyboardist Bill Nance also contributed his talents to a couple of tracks, adding a new dimension to a sound that is already hard to nail down. 'SHELTER is best described as sounding like Santana, Little Feat, Hendrix, the Allmans, Clapton, and the Beatles, all blended together in a splash of color that is all it's own. Starting things off is 'Brothers & Sisters' - it's Latin percussion and tell it like it should be lyrics let's you know that you're in for one hell of a ride. 'Rocketship' screams from start to finish, while the lighthearted 'Sweet Caroline's' takes you to a place where you can 'forget about your troubles and watch them fade away.' Next is 'Come Back Home,' a dark ballad with more punch than Mike Tyson. The title track 'Shelter' is the only thing stronger; you'll swear you've been kicked by a mule after this one. 'Prelude/Mother Mary' comes next, with it's peaks and valleys signifying life's ups and downs, the end, and the trip to the other side. Very powerful from start to finish. 'Waiting for the Sky to Fall' has Miley ranting like a street side preacher telling everyone the end is near. With it's loud guitars and in your face lyrics, you'll be sure to believe. 'Tell the Devil' is an intense song about walking that fine line between love and hate. Ending it all is 'Ashes to Ashes,' an instrumental dedicated to Hendrix and Vaughan. Showing just how far you can to with just ONE GUITARIS, ONE BASSIST, ONE DRUMMER, and a lot of SOUL - a format used on over half the songs on this CD. In a world where money has taken the place of soul, it's good to know that there is still one band out there who still believes in the power of music. The Jay Miley Band proves that if you listen, you CAN see it, smell it, touch it, and feel it in your bones. And if you let it, soul can move mountains.
