Product Notes

JIMMY HONEYMAN A brief history Jimmy Honeyman is the eponymous debut album of Jimmy Honeyman- a recording artist with a brooding nature and a dry sense of humor. While this is Jimmy's first CD release, he is a man with a past. His musical journey began with a group called Eardamage. The original line-up of the band featured Archer Prewitt on the drums, who went on to fame with The Sea and Cake, Sof Boy Comics and The Coctails. Eardamage projected a hard driving blend of garage rock with new wave edginess, fronted by Archer's brother, Brandt Prewitt. Jimmy and Archer went on to form the performance art duo known as The Bitters Brothers. The Bitter Brothers specialized in having a good time, deconstructing the music they loved and confusing the audience with their blend of drama, music, and comedy. Their sound was derived in equal parts from Strawberries by The Damned, Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie, and The Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel. This yielded a series of recordings that remain hotly traded as bootlegs among the Prewitt fan base. Still in his teens, Jimmy fronted a trio called the Bam Bam Club. The Bam Bam Club played the club circuit of the late 80's along with bands like The Replacements, Government Cheese, and the Afgan Whigs. This group featured Bill Lynch on the drums and Mike Feedback on the bass. Musically, they took their cues from early Elvis Costello, Iggy Pop, and Johnny Thunders. After a lengthy stint in graduate school, ("if I were a blues singer it would be my time in prison!!"), Jimmy's next project was the pop/punk group The Jellybabies. The nucleus consisted of the players from the Bam Bam Club with the addition of Letha Hall on vocals. They were best known for the song "Spring" that appeared on the Harvest Showcase compilation CD. "Spring" was also the lead track on their full-length cassette release "12 + 1", that featured an album cover designed by Archer Prewitt. Jimmy Honeyman represents his first solo effort. It is a collection of songs, old and new which are very personal in nature. "I wanted to do an album that was autumnal but Kentucky autumnal...warm days and cool nights....flaming colors and the creeping shadow of winter coming on.....the smell of wood burning stoves, wild horses and spilt whiskey. It's about relationships and emotions but from the perspective of a shut in (a voluntary shut-in) a man realizing he's no longer an adolescent battered by a run of relationships and taking stock." The album features Jimmy on a variety of instruments: guitar, mandolin, piano, organ, harmonica and electric sitar (an instrument he also plays with the group Ahel El Nagam). His lieutenant throughout the recordings is Ronnie Doo Wop (formerly with Eardamage, The Barnyard Animals, and The Whiskey Mountain Boys), blazing on lead guitar, dobro and electric bass guitar. " I was looking for the kind of thing that Ron Wood did on those great early seventies Rod Stewart albums before Rod became a Himbo...a palette of great sounds and vibe. Any color I needed he was able to provide." The recordings also features contributions from Ted Willard (Eardamage) on double bass, Bill Lynch on the drums, and Rob Magallon on vocals and additional keyboards. The album was recorded at Studio 2002 on 16 track analog tape by Rob Magallon." When I was thinking about those "autumn" albums that I really liked, most of them were recorded on 16 track machines. You can't get that "warm" sound with all digital equipment. Rob is a master of the lost art of analog recording and capturing a real time performance." Jimmy Honeyman proudly proclaims no PRO TOOLS on this project. In summary, Jimmy Honeyman, is the debut of a mature singer/songwriter. " I think I'm at the stage of my life where I can create music that is of "me" but not narcissistic. There are a lot of guys and gals with acoustic guitars singing "poor pitiful me". Hopefully, I'm doing something a little different."
