Product Notes

In a singer-songwriter world where contemporary trends demand slick guitar sounds and drum loop undercurrents, Jody Blackwell's newest CD Living Room Dances takes her eclectic fusion of jazz and acoustic music in an old school direction with powerful results. Her pristine unreverbed vocals float through this recording on the wave of ethereal open guitar tunings, Latin-influenced rhythms, and subtle jazz inflections from a talented band who bring to this collaboration the groove of their rock and funk backgrounds. Blackwell skillfully navigates the line between folk and jazz, with unpretentious, keenly observant lyrics delivered in a vocal style reminiscent of the young Joni Mitchell, but chords and harmonies that move in interesting, unexpected angles, more suggestive of an acoustic Pat Metheny. From the percolating sixteenth note groove of Bachelor Party, to the haunting imagery and hypnotically rhythmic drop C strumming of Rare Bird, Blackwell's acoustic sound provides more grit and power than subsonic bass or massive keyboard washes ever could.
