Product Notes

Brandstetter review 'Perception' by Scott Atkin. This 14 song project certainly touches on all the bases, leaning prominently on singer/songwriter, New Orleans and Chicago styles, and basic piano boogie. Brandstetter sings of love- gained, love-lost, odes to family members, guardian angels, and even tackles the difficult subject of terrorism-all in a sing-songy, non-edgy, competent, sincere manner. To classify Brandstetter's current CD would be like combining Billy Joel-like vocal presentations with a touch of Dr. John music-in a Tom Waits setting. The instrumentation, certainly proficient. Lyrically, all Brandstetter Songs have their definite and unique merits with what seems to be folksy, bluesy, homages to the past. All songs are well crafted and are more on the raw side, rather then the over-produced. Therefore the listener may have to put in some extra effort to really appreciate what Brandstetter says. In his song, 'Jeny's Song' the music takes on a little of the Beatles 'Blackbird' feel. But the sentiment comes across like Harry Chapin- a little sappy, still though a nice tune. Brandstetter coins nice phrases in his tunes that tackle apathy and rocky relationships with equal aplomb. But I quite like 'Addiction'. Also very nice 'It's all about me too'. This is the edgiest song on the album. It reminds me of the Animals, circa 1966 with Eric Burden at his most relevant. Brandstetter touches on Michael Franks territory one moment and then goes into mellow Jimmy Hendrix, 'All Along the Watch-Towery' sound the next. Not a bad criticism when one realizes that this is Brandstetter's debut effort. Famous guest artists appearing Jim Creegan 'bare naked ladies' Milcho Leviev great man of jazz Tom Fowler 'formally with Ray Charles, Frank Zappa' Mike Miller 'Natalie Cole' Moysus Lucas Jr 'Larry Carlton'
