Joe Thompson is a physician by day and a saxophonist by nite.He has studied with Jerry Coker, Bill Scarlet,and Benny Wallace,and Mark Boling. He has played and recorded in the Knoxville area,and has appeared with the above musicians as well as Donald Brown, Mark Boling Keith Brown and Rusty Holloway. This C.D. is the product of a fruitfull period of studying both improvisation and composition.Being able to play and record with these wonderfull musicians,particularly Donald Brown,was a dream come true.Ida Lupino,the Carla Bley standard starts things off.The tune is used as a recurring theme and is also used to introduce Black Orpheus.The first version is a dreamy rubato arrangement on a piano and synthesizer backdrop,with soprano and tenor sax interweaving the melody.Next is Littlefoot,the title song,written for my daughter.Everyone delivers swinging solos on this medium up bop tune.Check out Donald's lyrical spacious playing on Black Orpheus and his incendiary solo on the funkish Incognito.Next up is Brave New World,a 'tone poem' that explores a motif.Ida 2 is a blues shuffle that 'rocks'.
