Plays Piano Works By Dussek & Haydn[CD]
~ John Khouri
On this first release on my new label, San Francisco Fortepiano Society, I have coupled the late piano works of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) with that of his friend and admirer, Jan Ladislav Dussek (1760-1812). Duseek and Haydn met in London in 1791 when Haydn was on his first trip to England and Dussek helped Haydn get acquainted with the British concert scene. He lent Haydn his Broadwood piano for concerts and composing and both men enjoyed each others company. Both composers admired each other's compositions and were able to inspire and influence each other. This double CD set includes Haydn's last three piano sonatas plus two sets of variations while the second disc includes two of Dussek's greatest piano sonatas, the 'Farewell' from 1800 and the colorful and virtuosic 'Return to Paris' from 1807. Also on this disc is La Chasse and the lovely Canzonetta in G minor. All these compostions and divided up between Mr Khouri's two Broadwood pianos from 1801 and 1808. The recordings were made in an acoustically superb church built in 1871 and beautifully recorded by engineer Don Ososke.
