Jolof Groove built it's musical foundation by merging modern Pop and Rock music with ancient African influences, such as the Jolof beat also known as 'Mbalakh'. The Jolof beat is characterized by an accent on the second beat that is the signature of ancient music from the Jolof Kingdom (culturally one of the most influential Kingdoms that existed in Senegal). This accent on the second beat when played on African rhythms (6/8) or Modern rhythms (4/4, such as Rock and Pop) gives a unique and powerful groove which provides strong rhythmic foundations for captivating melodies with influences from Africa, America, the Middle East, and Europe. The title of Jolof Groove's first album, 'X-over', summarizes the underlying philosophy of the band, namely to bring different cultures together through music and create a new groove that is accessible to everybody, regardless of their cultural and musical backgrounds.
