Jon Galen's Debut CD, Mixed Bag demonstrates many different influences and styles. Songs such as High Maintenance Queen and Just Like Fine Wine showcase large rock and roll bands with excellent Los Angeles musicians. Stripped down acoustic arrangements such as Presence and The Night feature rich vocal harmonies and exquisite mandolin parts. The Saxophone work performed by Tom 'Junior' Morgan is magnetic and highly inspired. Joe Delia shines as a lead guitarist, bottleneck blues man, mandolin player and more. Jon Galen's lyrics are well conceived and delivered in a laid back manner. Shine, is a funky soulful piece, which cleverly calls for an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Afghanistan is a love story about the difficulties experienced by a couple when one of them is sent to fight for the U.S. Army in Afghanistan. High Maintenance Queen is an overt description of a particularly evil woman set to a funky, jazzy groove that reminds some listeners of Steely Dan. Come and Go describes a failing relationship and features some very unique acoustic guitar, piano and vocal harmonies. Galen covers the Dire Straits classic, Wild West End and places his unique vocal stamp on the track. The only other cover is the Cat Stevens song Trouble. Galen uses an all-electric arrangement on Trouble and really makes the song his own. The first track, Lead You has a catchy pop chorus and a dramatic blues transition. From start to finish, this CD shines.
