Recently featured on CBC Vancouver's jazz programme 'Hot Air,' "Orchidology" showcases the band's writing and improvisation with eight original jazz compositions by band members Jon Miller, Roy Styffe and James Young plus a new arrangement of the tune 'Men Without Heads' by Brit singer/songwriter Ross Mitson. Produced by studio wizard Wynn Gogol. Featuring some of the West Coast's best jazz musicians: Rob Cheramy on guitar, Roy Styffe on alto and soprano saxes, James Young on upright bass and leader Jon Miller on drums. Jacket design and drawings by artist and musician Doug Galbraith. The Jon Miller Quartet has been a fixture on the Vancouver Island live jazz scene since 2003. The group has played in several editions of Victoria JazzFest International and also makes regular appearances at Hermann's Jazz Club. Leader Miller graduated McGill University's jazz performance program, worked on the Montreal jazz scene in the late 80's and spent the 90's in Europe and the US. In this time he performed with Skip Bey, Vic Vogel, Greg Clayton, Andre Leroux and Charlie Hunter, among others. The 2007 addition of Roy Styffe on alto sax has been a great plus, his keen melodic sense and strong rhythmic drive meshing flawlessly with the playing styles of guitarist Cheramy, drummer Jon Miller and bassist James Young.
