'It was in 1990, out in Montauk, Long Island, when I first met and heard this blue-eyed blonde restaurateur, who would get up to sing on the slow nights. In 1993, my wife, June, and I attended the wedding of Julie and David in Barbados -- a romantic spot under the gazebo at the Great House on Turtle Beach. We often spoke about her musical progress. She was a chanteuse, looking to grow. Not long after that, I asked my friend Norman Simmons (who, incidentally, performs beautifully on this recording with Julie) if he would be able to fit her into his coaching schedule, between his working as accompanist for many premier jazz vocalists of our time. And he did! He heard something there, to be nourished... and in the interim, there has developed America's newestrising star. -- Percy Heath Modern Jazz Quartet.
