Product Notes

In May 2008 I graduated with a B.S in Music Education from The University of Vermont . . . scary. I have experienced so many things up to this point that would take me novels to write about ((hmm...definitely a possibility)). One of the most vivid conversations I remember is one I had with my father over the phone. I was struggling to find myself. What did I want to do in life? What type of degree should I pursue at UVM? After expressing my thoughts about changing to a Sociology Degree my father said, "If you want to change the world, do it through your music". I know I can't just write a song and change the world, but I do know that I can write about my own experiences and hope that somebody will know they are not alone. Growing up in small-town Connecticut, I found a love for soccer and music. After many, many years of year-round organized sports my body (knees especially) not so politely asked me to stop. So after six years I quit sports and focused on music. I remember every Saturday waking up to my father playing the guitar downstairs, and sometimes very early mornings during the week (thanks Dad!). I remember being around 11 years old and walking downstairs into the basement, picking up my dad's old Fender Stratocaster, which I could barely hold, and playing what I called "bar chords," which I can tell you now definitely were not to Cream's "Sunshine of your Love". Two years later my father introduced me to backing tracks and I learned to improvise the blues and sing at the same time "Someday (After a While) by Freddie King. This was the beginning of my musical career. My guitar teacher was so impressed with my ability to play guitar and sing he formed a band for me called "The Kate Sumner Band" (yeah, that's me). We played a total of three gigs before I graduated High School and moved to Vermont. During college I was introduced to the music of many artists (both local and worldly) who would forever influence my own music: Damien Rice, Gregory Douglass, Fiona Apple and so many more. I bought a keyboard, computer, and recording software and after four years wrote/recorded/produced my debut album "finding the Brighter Side"!!!!! Let me be the first to tell you that going from "bar chords" to being on iTUNES was one of the biggest accomplishments of my life. Everyday I continue to write music that both challenge my own technical abilities and the theories of the world. It is overwhelming to be in the world of "entertainment" with so many other people doing the same thing. All I can do is hope that my friends, fans, and family will see that the more they continue to support me, the more I can create and make "something from nothing at all." Peace, Kate January 2009.
