Product Notes

In the spring of 2004 Penny Webb had an idea to start a mommy punk band. She had a name for it, the Kegels, and she had her brother-in-law's strat to wang on. She thought she'd get some of her mom friends together and do punked up covers of the Wiggles, or the theme to the Teletubbies. A way to blow of some steam, drink some beer, and but really, just to get a break from the little ones. She started talking up her idea, getting varying degrees of interest from her friends. When she asked fellow preschool mom Jen Trujillo if she wanted to join her mommy punk band the answer was a resounding yes. In July of 2004 the Kegels first practice took place in Penny's basement with husband Dean on the kiddie drum kit, Jen on guitar, Penny on a borrowed bass, and friend Liz contributing vocals. The loud, fun, and exciting spark caught fire. Penny's husband Dean was coming up on his one-year cancer free anniversary and it was decided a big party was in order. Brother-in-Law Dan Webb's band, Rock Paper Scissors, would reunite for the event, and the Kegels would open. With an actual gig looming, Jen and Penny decided they ought to really figure out who was doing what, and write some music. Jen asked her friend Beth to try the drums, and within short order the band was in formation. In October, The Kegels made their debut in front of the very large and forgiving crowd of friends and family at the Salmon Bay Eagles Hall in Ballard. The party was a wonderful success, and the Kegels had pulled off the feat of five new originals and a cover tune. More importantly, they didn't suck! And, they didn't want to stop after the party. After discovering that gigs were unattainable without a demo, the Kegels recorded a disc in the fall of the same year. The four-song demo got them booked immediately at a number of venues and they have been gigging ever since. Beth's songwriting began extending beyond the 'mommy rock' genre so she and the band parted ways in the Spring of 2005. Jen and Penny soldiered on, enlisting the drumming talents of a number of friends, among them Jane Hall of the Opposum Wranglers, Terri Moeller of Transmissionary Six and the Walkabouts, Jon Hyde of the Jon Hyde Band, and finally Jim Wood of Rock Paper Scissors. After playing with the girls at the Bite of Seattle and Seafood Fest in Ballard, Jim was convinced to sign on as the full time drummer, so the Kegels officially stepped out of 'mommy rock' and into 'parental punk'. Additionally, two Ballard mommies, Amy Kastelin and Katharine Kimmins provide backup vocals on a few tunes, as well as the occasional shimmy. Their first EP, 'Totally Effaced' was released in early October of 2005 and contains the songs Kegel Beat, More Nu-Nu, All My Fault, SUX2B3, Three Pounds Nine, and Mini-Van Mom. The band looks forward to continuing to celebrate and explore the myriad aspects of parenthood through their tight harmonies, catchy tunes and clever lyrics.
