Product Notes

Georgia Sky takes it's title from a painting Debbie did of an amazing sunset in rural Georgia. The song 'Georgia Sky' started out as a tune called 'Red Sky' that I used to play with my brothers when we were teenagers. They'll probably get a kick out of hearing what Griffin and I have done with it. It has a sort of Civil War feel to it with the banjo joining guitar and cello to make an image rich instrumental. There are two songs on this CD that I wrote for my parents--both of whom were diagnosed with terminal illnesses at the time I wrote the first one, 'I Hear Your Voice.' I was able to sing that song to my mom before she died. My brothers recorded my dad playing Shenandoah on his harmonica-- a song we heard a lot growing up. We have a line from that recording in the background on the song. 'Back in Illinois' was written after my mom died. Some of the pictures that 'bring back memories' are in the CD insert. I guess you can tell how old I am by the cars in the photos. We still plan to do an all instrumental album someday. In the meantime, I hope you'll enjoy the three full instrumentals and the fourth--instrumental like song-- on this CD. Griffin composed and performed cello parts for two of them, Georgia Sky and Kaaterskill Falls. Kaaterskill Falls is named after another of Debbie's paintings and reminds us of one of YoYo Ma's Appalachian pieces... I Kinohi is nearly an instrumental. The only words are the text of Genesis 1:1, 'In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,' in Hawaiian. The song starts off with just guitar, then the voices join in and it becomes a mystical chant celebrating God's creation of the world.
