NEXT LIVE PERFORMANCE - CHECK OUT MYSPACE.COM/KINGORBA FOR UPDATES 'King Orba...2003 nominee for Best Rock Video on Austin Music Network, the only independent music network in the world...the title of the song is 'Crisp' off the HALF MAST album.' AMN News- channel 15 Over the past fourteen years King Orba has been content crafting his voice and playing his songs for his friends. One of these friends was made on the set of the film, 'The Life of David Gale'. The friend was the fiance' of director Alan Parker. In the summer of 2002, King Orba receives the call he's been waiting for... Alan Parker: King? I'm calling to talk about music. King Orba: Cool. Which song? Alan Parker: Well. Three songs actually. Ironic, isn't it, that the musician director Alan Parker chose to represent Austin's renowned music scene, with two songs emanating from downtown clubs and the third from Kate Winslett's stereo, is unknown to Austinites. (here gentle reader, I must apologize if you are one of the 30 or so who happened to pick up, 'The Personal Pleasure Album*,' at Waterloo's 'Hear Texas Here' rack. I'm sorry. I didn't know you were reading. Maybe Kate turned you on to King Orba). For those unfamiliar with King Orba, his sound lies somewhere in between Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes and Jack Johnson. He sites artist as diverse as T. Rex, Prince, and the Sex Pistols, as influences. King Orba keeps things loose and upbeat, and punches in found sound such as an AM radio- most poignantly on a song about fishing with his grandmother* - or drumsticks on a cola bottle. The bulk of his oeuvre is recoreded on a TASCAM 4-track. He fell in love with his porta-studio and recalls 12-hour tryst that kept the neighbors up: 'Yeah, hi... it's about 3:30. Can we stop with the music for the night?' There's just so much to write and sing about. This may explain his prolific songwriting, but it does nothing to explain his proficiency in relating an experience in rich visual language. There are few musicians whose message comes across clearly without labored study. Every song of King Orba's that I've heard, receives this hallmark. When asked what his ultimate goal in music is, King Orba responds, 'To create a song which so effectively captures a moment and vibe that it would be impossible to recreate it when performing.' You get a sense that he stands as good a chance as any in succeeding. By Will Chancellor PUSH Magazine 02-03 *('The Personal Pleasure Album' available on CD Baby soon!)
