Product Notes

The Kites are a hot new retro Indie rock band. They deliver a powerful, energetic and rocking blend of 70's-esq rock combined with a modern Indie edge. The spectacular debut album ' Liquor and Poker' is out now through Matchbox Recordings. Featuring the catchy, sing-a-long, anthemic and melodic as hell single ' It Ain't Love'. This album will get you into a decadent party mood and also features pub and club fave ' Do Ya Wanna lay ( next to me )' and the dynamite retro masterpiece and title track ' liquor and Poker'. Think Jon Squire playing guitar with The Black Crowes on a decadent and melodic trip with Jet and Led Zeppelin. Basically The Kites rock like there's no tomorrow and their tunes get stuck n your head and leave you begging for more. ( mmmmmmmm Very nice album cover too - Ed ). WE GOT THE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW 1. What made you decide to form a band, tell us a bit about THE KITES history ? Each member of THE KITES have known each other for some time while playing in different cover bands. After that, and prior to THE KITES, we teamed up to produce a quality rock covers band with a dedicated frontman vocalist. Interests in that band were opposed, as the singer wanted to continue covering rock classics whereas we (the musicians) were keen to play our own music. Needless to say that band was very shortlived, and within a few months we (the musicians only) had begun working together to produce what you know as tHE kITES. We are still less than a year old and already have achieved considerable progress with our work. Our gigs started on New Years Eve 2003, and launched our first album, 'Liquor & Poker' in April of 2004. Having played all our local venues with astounding response and success, the national venues are now being targeted with some festivals already being lined up. The second album is well on the way with a considerable number of tracked already finalised. Recording should take place early next year. Daz: Playing music is in my blood, I can't see myself not doing this. It's like a kind of religion in a way, so I can't think of what made me decide to form a band. THE kITES as yet has had a short history, as we only formed a year ago, but we've done some really exciting sweaty pub and club gigs. The album we've cut, I'm quite happy with too, but I feel our best and most exciting work is yet to come. Phil: I think everyone who learns an instrument has some desire to play in a band, right from the learning stages copying role-models. Creating anything feels great, and creating great music as part of a team is extremely fulfilling. Jimmy: I've got the same blood view as our kid. I have the desire to play now more than ever. 2. Who or what are your influences? Daz: I'm very influenced by and admire very much, rock bands of the seventies, such as Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Free, Cream, Iron Maiden etc., but I also hold immense admiration for artists such as Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, David gray. I think this clash of tastes merge quite well into my style of playing. Contemporary with a hard edge. Phil: Mainly Blues and Rock music. Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page. Cream, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd. John Squiers is a modern influence for me and The Manic Street Preachers - a very unique band. Jimmy: Ian Paice, John Bonham, Steve White. The Beatles, The Who, Queen, early Quo, Roxy Music, U2. Old school stuff tends to fire me up more than anything new! 3. What modern artists do you rate? Daz: Currently glued to my stereo is The Zutons, The Bees, Biffy Clyro, The Darkness. I really like the Velvet Revolver album too. Phil: The Zutons, The Bees, Rialto, Stereophonics, Ocean Colour Scene and Jet. Jimmy: The Ordinary Boys, The Killers, The Zutons, Keane, The Bees. I'm currently listening to the new Libertines album, it's pretty cool. 4. If you could choose to record a song with any other artist/band alive or dead who would it be and why? Daz: I'd like to be Paul Weller's Bassist. (if I wasn't a kITE). So I'd liked to have played on his version of The Beatles Come Together. Phil: Cream, the world's best 3 piece band. Perfect timing, bizarre but great lyrics. Simple but brillaint writing. White Room would have been cool to play on. Jimmy: Led Zep's Immigrant Song, as it's a demanding pattern, and Bonham made it sound so easy. 5. What inspires you to write your music ? Daz: Other great artists I happen to hear. Nothing much really, it just happens. Phil: Yeah,....as Daz says, it just happens. Now and again though watching a talented band or artist gives you an extra bit of buzz. Jimmy: The Three of us in the same room jamming does it! 6. Name your all time fave track by another artist ? Daz: If I was nail down one, I guess it's The Knack - My Sharona. It'll change tomorrow. Phil: White Room (Cream) / The Ocean (Led Zeppelin - live edition) - sorry! Can't decide between these two! Jimmy: Kashmir by Led Zep. Like our kid, it'll change tomorrow! 7. What instruments do you use ? Daz: Rickenbacker 4003 deluxe Bass 1974 model (Black with white plate). Gibson Thunderbird. SWR amps with Hartke cabs. Phil: Eric Clapton Signature Fender Stratocaster issue 01. Marshall Valstate VS102. Epiphone Les Paul Black Beauty Custom. Crybaby Wah. Dunlop picks. Jimmy: Yamaha Oak Custom in natural oak finish, Anton Fig signature series custom snare. Zildjian cymbals, A and K custom models in various sizes. Vic Firth sticks. Hardcase cases. 8. What are your ambitions for your music. Where do you see yourself in 5 years ? Daz: I want people to be into tHE kITES, like I'm into the bands I like. In 5 years time, I want this to be a reality. Phil: Our ambitions are to maximise the exposure of tHE kITES and their work to as many people as possible. To play wherever and whenever, and to explore as many avenues necessary in order that we can share with others what we find a pleasure, and hope that they enjoy listening to it as much as we have enjoyed creating and playing it. In 5 years. THE kITES see themselves performing major venues promoting albums retailing in major high street stores and quality online outlets. Jimmy: For people to know us for being an honest and hard working exciting live band. 9. How would you describe your music and what genre do you think it fits into ? Daz: Our music is definitely retro, kinda seventies with a modern wave. I think we fit in the same bag as Jet, or something. Phil: We play a quite diverse range but aim to keep a kITES signature on what we do. Rock/Indie is probably the best description. I'd agree with Daz that we fit into a similar slot as Jet. Jimmy: Edgy, tight, with a loose feel. No bullshit rock! 10. Your new album has a very cool retro rock sound. Very 70's esq with a groovy and catchy Jet-esq, black crowes, electric six vibe Where was it recorded/produced ? Our album was recorded local to us in Barton-upon-Humber at the Rich Noble Sound Studios. Rich provided us with a very comfortable atmosphere to work in together with some very valuable advice and help. Our hats go off to Rich for his time, efforts and hard work. 11. Who are THE KITES and what does each member play ? tHE kITES are: Darren Bramley: Vocals & Bass Phil Bingham: Guitars & Backing Vocals (live only) Jimmy Bramley: Drums & Keyboards.
