New Blood: by Waldo the Squid @Drum Magazine. Most of the time drummers send the Squid demos of the bands they play with in order to show off their carefully manicured chops and groove abilities. But Daryaie a Southern California native-took matters into his own hands and sent the Squid an impressive solo CD titled MY SOUL. After reading his bio we were a bit surprised that he could even find the time to record the 13 tracks on his CD. Besides having album releases scheduled later this year with LXIX, Drastic Party, Rio Delux Band, and Agent Shocking, Daryaie can currently be heard on the album Cool Water by Kirsten. But while these bands represent styles ranging from hip-hop to industrial, Daryaie's solo CD is another thing altogether. By using his stockpile of electronic percussion controllers and library of sounds, he has composed a full CD of eclectic tracks that combine world percussion with crazy sound effects and a smattering of drum set. But rather than record a string of flashy drum solos, Daryaie creates dense arrangements that concentrate on powering the groove and allowing the beautiful sounds of the various instruments to ring out. The result is an ambient collection that would work perfectly at a late-night rave.
