Standard Time is a 'combination of great playing and sheer sonic majesty... If you like your jazz straight up, Standard Time will make you very happy. If you like your jazz to take you into new musical territory, it will make you ecstatic.' Mark Rheaume, CBC Jazz Cello? The cello is perhaps the most neglected instrument in traditional jazz which is surprising given it's rich warm sound along with a versatility in colour and register. On this CD Marshall brings her diverse musical experience and the lyrical beauty of the cello to familiar standards such as Summertime and Girl From Ipanema to create a new and unusual voice in the world of traditional jazz. Cuts from Standard Time have received a lot of air play on many stations including eight different CBC shows, on JAZZ.FM and the Bob Parlocha Show as well as being featured on the Ralph Benmergui Show. The CD also features the multi-award winning Don Thompson on bass & piano, with Dan Ionescu guitar and Mark Duggan on percussion. 'Kye's interpretations of these timeless standards on her latest recording are wonderful. Her mastery of the cello brings jazz inprovisation to a new higher level.' Rob Fogle CHRY-fm 'Kye Marshall is an exceptional, daring & talented jazz performer - one of the most underrated musicians around. She plays with excitement and straight from her heart.' [Al Peabody Jazz criric] KYE MARSHALL Cellist and composer, Kye Marshall creates jazz that is fresh, lyrical and vibrant. Her strong melodic sense and the warm resonance of her instrument create new sounds for the jazz idiom. Extensive experience playing classical, popular, Latin and as an avant-garde improviser enriches her performances. Marshall is an accomplished performer and composer of both jazz and classical music. In her previous life as a classical cellist Kye performed with various orchestras and chamber groups including the O'Keefe Centre Orchestra (principal cellist) and the National Ballet Orchestra of Canada (assistant principal cellist). As a jazz musician she has performed on TVOntario, in the Toronto Jazz Festival, the Distillery Jazz Festival, the Jazz and Blues Festival, the Mayworks Festival, and at numerous venues around Toronto including the Pilot, Montreal Bistro, Quigley's, Mezzetta's, Le Select, Gate 403, Oscars, Free Times Café, the Universities of Guelph, Toronto, and Waterloo among others. Her first two CDs of original jazz compositions - Say When (2002) and Winter's End (1999) - featuring Marshall on cello and Don Thompson on piano, incorporated a diversity of elements from baroque to contemporary. Say When, in particular, sparked media interest that led to feature articles in two major national newspapers and an interview and performance on television. Not only does she perform with her jazz duo and quartet, she also plays regularly with her classical string quartet and many avant-garde improvisation groups. Marshall performs 'spontaneous compositions' with Thomas Baker (piano) creating 'in the moment' music through improvisation. This avant-garde duo have released two CDs at the Music Gallery: Chiaroscuro (2001) and In the Moment (1998). Marshall has also improvised with groups in the Victoriaville Toronto Festival, Fringe Jazz Festival, Artword Theatre, the Distillery Jazz Festival, the Rex, the Cameron, the Idler Pub, among others. A recipient of numerous commissions, grants and awards, Marshall's classical compositions have received much attention. She has composed for orchestra and chamber groups, for film, radio drama, theatre and dance with performances in the US, Austria and in many venues around Toronto, including CBC Radio. Her work as a music psychotherapist involves improvising with individual clients and groups on a wide variety of easy-to-play instruments to provide a vehicle for creativity and non-verbal expression. In 2003, she produced and performed on the CD Playing From the Heart that features improvisations by the women's group she facilitates for Sheena's Place. Marshall is an outdoor enthusiast and amateur photographer. Her photographs appear on all her CDs. 'Standard Time is a fabulous CD. Kye Marshall gives a terrific performance. It's wonderful to hear the beautiful sound of the cello transform familiar standards.' Wally Dawson CKLM-fm.
