Laurel Grove grew out of an ensemble at Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA) under the guidance of Dave Hollender, a prominent and sought-after banjo and bass player in the Boston area. As we began to rehearse outside of the classroom, it became evident that the group held amazing potential. We began playing sets composed entirely of traditional bluegrass music. As time went on, we began experimenting with our musical style and variety. This experimentation led to an energetic playing and performing style seldom found in this genre. We quickly decided to test our music on a live audience. Laurel Grove's first performance was an opening spot at the Cantab Lounge; Cambridge, MA. (joined by Dave Hollender). The performance was received wonderfully by all who attended, and the band was asked to return. Since that night we have played the Cantab Lounge several times, opening for acts such as: Orin Starr, Crazy Creek, etc. Through the Cantab and various other venues, Laurel Grove has managed to develop a devoted following of music lovers. At this point, we have our audience to thank for keeping us motivated and our music fresh.
