The Free Jazz producer and broadcaster, John Rotiers, aka, Jazz Fossiel, because of his resplendant age, was celebrating his twentieth release at Factor 44 in Antwerp. Bateau Lavoir was booked to perform in his honour as part of the party. As the date drew closer we found out that André Goudbeek would also be performing. We suggested to André that instead of two performances we could combine as a quartet for the evening, to which he agreed so we arranged a warm up session at the Bateau Lavoir studio a few days before the performance. At this point none of the trio had ever met André before. We recorded the session and a large part of that recording is presented on this CD. It is an unedited continuous free improvisation which has been cut into four indexes so you can play the whole track or skip between the four parts. It's a relaxed, informal, live, recording, kept as natural as possible including occasional talking. We gave it this form & decided to release it because the qualities it posseses express very well the immediate rapport of the participants and the communicative unscored improvisation that is at the heart of our musical values. Bataeu Lavoir is a production house for free jazz & improvised music. It is run by three musicians, Thomas Campaert, Patries Wichers & Giles Thomas, who also perform as Bateau Lavoir. Bateau Lavoir has inititiated special projects with different artists including; Archie Shepp, Kahil el Zabar, Billy Bang, Hamiet Bluiett, André Goudbeek, Phill Niblock, The Igbo Union, filmmaker Markus Hansen & many others. New projects are in the pipeline. André Goudbeek is best known for his work on the Alto Saxophone & Bass Clarinet with groups like the John Tchicai-André Goudbeek duo, Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath, the Willem Breuker Kollektief, his work with Fred Van Hove and many other ensembles.
