With his stylistic range and technically dazzling playing, trumpeter Lee Morgan was an important force on the Jazz scene of the 1950s and '60s, ranking alongside Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard as the best trumpeters of the era. Although Morgan is best known for his Jazz-Rock Boogaloo hit "The Sidewinder" (included here), he was capable of playing straightforward Bop, adventurous Post-Bop, and heartbreaking Ballads with equal facility. There's a taste of each of these on Blue Note's The Best of Lee Morgan. Truly interested listeners should seek out Morgan's excellent studio albums from the period, but The Best is a concise, well-selected introduction for those unfamiliar with this Jazz giant's work.
