This World gracefully integrates M. Bentley's various approaches to sound design and composition. Created with a combination of DSP tools, field recordings and more conventional synthesis, the suites Chronos & Kairos and Import are related thematically and conceptually. These pieces are extended audio snapshots, sonic gestures towards narrative and story-telling. In one sense this is programme music for the 21st century, or perhaps a soundtrack for memoirs never written. "This world is in motion. Particles we can only detect obliquely are moving at the speed of light, arrows of time passing through our bodies. This world is not only in flux, it is flux - never the same from one moment to the next. Our own subjective spaces coalesce from this liquid state and our lives take shape as an erosion in the chaos. Lines of communication create stabiles, the forms we rely on to build our domain. For me music is one such connection, simultaneously physical and ephemeral - an audio distillation of a moment, of a person, of this world." -M. Bentley Foundry founder M. Bentley curated and contributed to 2005's Thing Asunder release and has provided pieces for many other projects including sub. Terra (2003), Bibimbap (2004), and Jonathan Hughes' Fluidities (2004). This World (2006) is Bentley's first solo release in over four years. BIO: Michael Bentley founded The Foundry in the mid 80s as an outlet for his chapbooks. Beginning in 1995 cassette releases appeared under the Foundry imprint, and in 1997 the first Foundry CDs were released. Bentley has recorded under several names [eM, Mollusk/Malcolm Bly, The Apiary and Rhomb (with Nathan Kreisberg)] authoring a number of releases for various labels including Fällt (Import was part of the invalidObject series); SlapArt (the Retrograd cassette EP), and his own Foundry label. There have also been a number of compilation appearances, including MIT Press' Computer Music Journal (Winter 2000), No Type's The Freest of Radicals, and Little Fury Things' No Compression Festival CD. Bentley continues to collaborate with the Archipelago collective on both releases (Bibimbap in 2004, the Islands EP Series in 2000) and live performances. In recent years Bentley has been working with video, incorporating his years of experience in graphic arts to create Chronos & Kairos, St. Michael Oubliette, and Scenes from Thing Asunder. Although he was born in the Bay Area, Bentley spent much of his childhood in the Midwest. Living in university towns (the son of a professor) meant that he and his family had access to arts of all kinds; and drawing, writing, and music became fascinations early on. After returning west with his family for high school and college Bentley eventually settled into a career in graphic design. It was in his teenage years that Bentley's interest in electronic music developed, and after meeting Nathan Kreisberg (the other half of Rhomb) in high school, the two set out to acquire/build a small studio. Their first pieces were recorded onto a refurbished four-track reel-to-reel and the rest is... well not really history, but that was definitely the beginning of a long journey that eventually brought The Foundry to life. Currently Bentley lives in Berkeley, California with his wife and works in several concurrent careers, including musician and director of The Foundry.
