Product Notes

Born and raised in Southern California, Mary Ann Douglas is a product of West Coast Jazz influence. She composes the music and writes the lyrics for all her songs. Trained as a vocalist in the beginning, she didn't return to music until after finishing graduate school, getting married, and beginning a family. In 1997, she produced her first vocal jazz CD, "True Stories". This was followed by "Sensory" in 1999, "Does Thinking Just Make It That Way?" in 2001, and "Unfinished Business" in 2007. On all her recordings she has been surrounded by the talents of great local Southern California musicians including Mundell Lowe, Mike Wofford, Peter Sprague, John Rekevics, Bob Magnusson, Jim Plank, Rephael Harp, Kevin Esposito, Gary Pack, Dan Papaila, and Dave Hoffman. Her CDs have received good critical reviews and airplay both in the United States and France. Music lovers who like original material with introspective, real-life lyrics set to a variety of blues, bossa nova, pop, and smooth jazz stylings will want to acquire the entire collection. Not much performing for this lady - she does what she wants to do - writes and produces. You may catch her at the microphone occasionally in the San Diego area where she lives. REVIEWS: ''True Stories' is a confident effort that has been nicely put together. . . Many vocalists at work in locations all across the landscape would be well off to take a clue from the project that Mary Ann Douglas has made here: unpretentious, at moments unique, personal renderings that have not been beaten to death. One suspects that her songwriting will evolve further.' Jim Merod - Marge Hofacre's Jazz News 'With a presentation resembling the vibrancy and tone quality of Joanie Sommers and the candid articulation of Bob Dorough, singer Mary Ann provides the music and lyrics for fifteen songs about love and romance. Mary Ann's songs offer lucid verbal expression, percussive phrasing that sometimes borders on vocalese, and ample instrumental solos to portray the necessary moods.' Jim Santella - L.A. Jazz Scene 'Today's jazz singers should take a look at the songs penned by Californian Mary Ann Douglas. The lyrics not only tell a story, but the stories are interesting, often fervent, and always to the point. The structure of her music accommodates arrangements that are both absorbing and substantive. And there is sufficient variety to sustain the attention of both performer and listener. . . While it is usually a risky endeavor for a singer to limit her maiden album to her own compositions, in this case it pays off handsomely. These are tunes other singers would be wise to make note of.' Dave Nathan - All Music Guide 'Mary Ann Douglas goes down an unusual road. She's an intelligent mainstream jazz singer and she writes all her songs herself, doing the sort of confessional singer-songwriter jazz that pop artists like Carole King and Joni Mitchell have eased towards in past years. . . The entire package is so slick and attractive you wonder why some major record label doesn't snap up Douglas and set her beside other jazz-pop singers like Holly Palmer and Fiona Apple.' Jerome Wilson - Cadence.
