Born and raised in Southern California, Mary Ann Douglas is a product of West Coast Jazz influence. She composes the music and writes the lyrics for all her songs. Trained as a vocalist in the beginning, she didn't return to music until after finishing graduate school, getting married, and beginning a family. In 1997, she produced her first vocal jazz CD, "True Stories". This was followed by "Sensory" in 1999, "Does Thinking Just Make It That Way?" in 2001, and "Unfinished Business" in 2007. On all her recordings she has been surrounded by the talents of great local Southern California musicians including Mundell Lowe, Mike Wofford, Peter Sprague, John Rekevics, Bob Magnusson, Jim Plank, Rephael Harp, Kevin Esposito, Gary Pack, Dan Papaila, and Dave Hoffman. Her CDs have received good critical reviews and airplay both in the United States and France. Music lovers who like original material with introspective, real-life lyrics set to a variety of blues, bossa nova, pop, and smooth jazz stylings will want to acquire the entire collection. Not much performing for this lady - she does what she wants to do - writes and produces. You may catch her at the microphone occasionally in the San Diego area where she lives. REVIEWS: "Mary Ann Douglas is a talented composer gifted with a smooth lush voice that provides elegant interpretations of her music. With Unfinished Business, Douglas captures a sharp performance of gentle soft jazz vocals in one plentiful and pleasurable package." Edward Blanco - EjazzNews.com "Working with an all-star ensemble, the singer warms with an intimacy that defines pure jazz and blues from the inside out. With Unfinished Business, Douglas moves onward and upward as she takes this winning performance up a few notches. It's all about heart and her genuine delivery . . . Her lyrics tell stories; the kind that keep you thinking about why things work out the way they do." Jim Santella - AllAboutJazz.com "I haven't been able to quit listening to this one . . . great lyrics throughout the whole recording . . . I heartily entreat listeners to pick up a copy of Unfinished Business and let Mary Ann Douglas fill your life with moonlight and roses for a while." Brad Walseth - JazzChicago.net 'I watched the European Song Contest 2007 held in Helsinki, Finland last night. . . By putting forward this European formidable event in contrast to the 'Unfinished Business' CD album by Mary Ann Douglas - one will find the musical world far, far richer for being in possession of her remarkable volume of love songs - for such tender beauty that it is - is a joy forever.' Ian King - Kings Jazz Review 'The new CD is full of intimate songs tastefully performed by Douglas and a group of strong Southern California players . . . No matter the style, there is a timeless quality to Douglas' music. Her songs focus on universal themes and emotions like love, loss, and desire, and her warm easy delivery adds to the accessibility of the music. There is nothing dated about the material. Douglas' songs are introspective, providing life lessons without the sermon.' Donna Kimura - JazzReview.com.
