Product Notes

RECENT PRESS FOR MATTRESS THE STRANGER (Seattle)Portland seems to breed one- or two-person electro cells like cluster bombs breed terrorists. Mattress, aka Rex Marshall, is one such synthesizer- strapped suicide bomber from our sister city to the south. In fact, you better capitalize Suicide, as Marshall's oscillator drones and organ preset beats evoke the Alan Vega-fronted NYC band as much as his more industrial-grade throbbing recalls, well, Throbbing Gristle. Marshall's depressed baritone croon, though, is something more like a lounge take on Nick Cave or Ian Curtis. These are all impossibly high marks to aim for, and it should be noted that Mattress's sound is markedly more lo-fi (and again, loungey) than his sonic forebears. Still, the man is a character, he's aiming high, and his live shows look to be something else. ERIC GRANDY LA RECORD (LosAngeles)Mattress came into my life while on a trip through Portland: I was there for one night and the friend/host had played with him like a month before and insisted we go to some weird expensive bar to see Mattress. Fifteen minutes of waiting happened, and then Mattress went on and we left immediately after before any other set could start. I can't imagine a better way I could have experienced Portland for the first time. Mattress is one man playing dark hyper-minimalist monophonic electronic songs on a tape player over Lynch-lounge-singer vocals. But don't let his set-up alone sell you on why Mattress should be a legend-inside every sine-wave drone and compressed drum blip is a God-given ability to write songs. SONGS. Seeing a Mattress show means a sport-coat wearing John Lurie doppelganger walking up to a mic and a tape deck, pressing play, and putting his vocals through delays and pitch shifters. Then you'll wonder why others rely on chords and harmonies when Rex Marshall can make a full pop song with one note at a time. Also speaking of pitch shifters-don't look for the next Dan Deacon in Mattress or you'll be sorely (possibly deservedly) disappointed. Mattress is a songwriter first and button-presser second. Since I saw him this summer, I haven't heard of him doing a tour until now, so unless you're moving to Portland (original!) you're unlikely to be this blessed again. Mattress gives a good name to one-dude electrobands: he's a speck of gold that makes the sand worth sifting through. (HK)
