Colagens (Collages), the title of my first recording, does not refer to an array of disengaged compositions or an amount of musical ideas, but a perception of a whole work that is, in my point of view, the recognition of the whole piece. Being contemporary Brazilian music, this recording is based on original compositions with a complex rhythmic approach and collective improvisations. The compositions are a blend of many musical and non-musical concepts which range from Ron Miller's modal experimentations to José Eduardo Gramani's polyrhythmic structures, besides my own impressions on the Brazilian poet Gonçalves Dias, images and collages by the artist Tide Hellmeister, the spirituality of John Coltrane, and every-day happenings. MC4+ was brought up when the musical concept was configured. The sound of the group was built on the musician´s peculiarity, and about this I'd like to say: the contrasts were possible by Carlos Ezequiel's creativity way of playing the drums. The vigor and precision on the bass line by Guto Brambilla was essencial to keep the polyrhythmic linearity. The way Lupa Santiago uses colors and develops melodic motif was essential to place him in a central position, leading the course of the compositional development. Vincent Gardner and Paulinho Malheiros' incredible musical awareness is beyond belief. Always attentive, they suggested, intervened, and added incredible musical ideas. They also knew when to keep silent so that their silence could be noticed. As for me, it is very clear that I felt as if I was at a table gathered with these great musicians, acknowledging happiness provided by seeing their satisfaction for taking part in their host's banquet. MC "Forging into a new and exciting rhythmic landscape, Marcelo Coelho breaks new ground with his group on this recording. This is just the beginning --- I look forward to further development of the group's sound along with the leader's future compositions.' David Liebman.
